9 Gifts of Christmas: PLATF9RM's Present Guide

Shopping remains a large part of the Christmas experience, yet finding the perfect present can ensure the most zen person becomes encumbered with holiday tension. Fortunately, PLATF9RM is jam packed with talented members creating products that’ll make perfect gifts for your friends and family. Read our guide and make shopping stress a thing of Christmas past.

Family friendly games from Gamely

Family company Gamely started their games-making venture to lure families away from screens and appreciate one another’s company. Randomise is their best seller: a combination of Pictionary and Charades that comes housed in a box adorned with adorable illustrations. It’s meant to unleash the boundless arena of your imagination: a better gift than another pair of socks, right?

Learn to code with Confident Web Design

Coding is fiendishly tricky but increasingly a vital part of many jobs. For anyone thinking about learning, Confident Web Design is a book that makes the otherwise complex process accessible to beginners. Author Kenny Wood’s status is backed up by his day job as founder of the web design agency, Indigo Melody. (Cute fact: the company’s named after Kenny’s wife and daughter - Christmas is all about family, right?)

Perfect nails from The Gel Bottle

Receiving The Gel Bottle’s nail varnish is to receive the gift of glam. Their collection boasts a multitudinous selection of colours and, with names like Candy, Fizz, Ruby and Cinnamon Spice, they can be pretty unintentionally, on-the-nose, Christmassy. As well as varnish, they also sell any tools you’d need at home (or, indeed, a salon).

Local art from Nine x Nine

We all know Brighton is a city of the arts. This is obviously great but also means that knowing where to look for arty gifts can be overwhelming. Nine by Nine are the Christmas angels who whittle it down for us. They create a selection of nine prints from local and up-and-coming illustrators and designers, using predominantly vibrant and playful aesthetics with some striking typography work.

Sustainable fashion from Amberoot

The environmental and ethical damage done by Christmas present-buying is not so jolly, but your conscience can rest easy when you shop with Amberoot. They only sell ethically on-point products: zero plastic, zero sweatshops, organic and always fairtrade. From underwear to an upcycled clock, their apparel, accessories and homeware all have two things in common: they’re sustainable and lovingly selected by founder Gintare Matuzaite.

As an extra festive bonus, PLATF9RM members receive an extra 15% off. For how to redeem, check out the perks section on the portal.

Perfect prints from The Private Press

Prints from Private Press may have been shown in Saatchi Gallery, but they’re also perfect for your Uncle Brian’s wall. TPP was founded and is run by screen printing genius Gary Parselle, who collates and collaborates with artists to produce a selection of hand-stretched limited edition copies, all for sale on their website.

Soothing tunes from Jay Torry

Still My Teacher, Jay Torry’s release of 2018, is available to download from iTunes. The album is dedicated to Jay’s late piano teacher and combines renditions of classical, piano-led compositions by Beethoven and Rachmaninoff, alongside Jay’s self-written songs. It is a delicate and quiet antidote to the frantic Christmas songs blaring on every corner.

Pastel prints and pimped-out pumps from Cleo Barbour

Cleo Barbour specialises in art deco-inspired pastel prints that conjure warmth in the depths of winter. She started by making shoes for her own Cleo B label but is currently focusing on exploring her love of digital design. Shoe lovers fear not, because Cleo hasn’t totally abandoned her first love: her website also features a charming and unique range of lace grills, locks and charms - to pimp out your pumps that could do with some festive colour.

A Cannon of Bison’s Beer for Christmas cheer

Bison_PLATF9RM .jpeg

Bison have quite a few options: a beer making kit, Bison merch, a beer tasting experience, and the creme de la creme of boozy gifts - a ‘cannon of craft beer’. This gift’s got both style and substance, with the encasing illustrations earning status as an ornament in its own right. You have the option of either a half or full yard of local or international beers; local picks include a selection of Gun, Lost Pier, Cloak + Dagger and Kiln (plus Bison's own, of course). And it’ll take the edge off the big day - two (mocking) birds one stone.

If we weren’t already tempted by a very Bison Christmas, they’ve also got a beer tasting event showcasing a range of Sussex brews. And in the season of giving, they’ve chucked in a bit of cheeky discount for PLATF9RM members - thanks pals!

And one extra, seeing as it's the holidays - Goodmoney, the voucher to rule them all

Goodmoney vouchers are a great way to support Brighton’s independents. The voucher can be spent in a multitude of Brighton’s local independent business (and incidentally, some of our favourite hot spots too); Bison, Whirligig Toys, Present in the Laine, Little Beach Boutique, Fatto A Mano, Pizza Face, Lust and plenty more. That one small voucher could become pretty much anything; something edible or boozy, an addition to wardrobe or home, maybe bouldering or life-drawing - it’s pretty much a bottomless sack of great gifts.
