Forget Blue Monday! Here’s 9 Reasons January Is Actually Brilliant

January gets a bad rap, especially today: Blue Monday.

According to the PR company that dreamed up the idea, Blue Monday is the year’s most depressing day. Supposedly the combination of giving up our favourite things, empty bank accounts and S.A.D-influenced ennui has us all pondering the vagaries of our existence.

However, the mental health charity Mind dismiss the notion of Blue Monday as ‘dangerously misleading’ and that “those of us who live with depression know that those feelings aren’t dictated by the date.”

Therefore, we thought we’d tell you why we think January is, despite the PR hype suggesting otherwise, pretty rad.

1: Tax Return = Done

There’s a law that dictates freelancers and the self-employed must dread their tax return with the same zeal one might normally reserve for a root canal. Therefore, the sense of relief when it’s done (and really wasn’t that bad in the first place) is real. Want to skip the stress next year? Get a bit organized: foremost among this is don’t just throw all your receipts for the year in a big shoe box. (Pot calling ket black here ‘cos, let’s be honest, we’ve all done this before.)

2: NO MORE PARTIES OH ME OH MY PRAISE THE LORD

Look, we love Xmas parties. Lord knows, we threw a couple. But it gets too much and the effects of all that revelry can negatively fray the threads of our physical and mental health. January is officially a no party zone: kick back, fire up Netflix and cherish a clear head in the morning.

(At least until 25th January, when we have our first Social of the Year. GAMES NIGHT, BAY-BEES.)

3: Resolutions rock!

Resolutions should be embraced, despite the fact that, according to a 2015 study, only 46% of us will be sticking to them come June. The key is picking wisely.

“If you do it out of the sense of self-hate or remorse or a strong passion in that moment, it doesn’t usually last long,” said Dr. Michael Bennett, a psychiatrist and co-author of two self-help books. “But if you build up a process where you’re thinking harder about what’s good for you, you’re changing the structure of your life…then I think you have a fighting chance.”

4: It’s the best time to meet a brand new hunny

According to match.com, the busiest time for its online dating service is between December 26th and February 14th. So if you’re dating light is firmly green, now’s the time to get that motor running.

5: Turn bad funds into better brains

The jury is still very much out on whether money can make you happy, but not having money can allow you to use your time for personal growth. Instead of getting wavy in the pub, tonight you’re going to stay in and read a book. Turn those perilous January finances into a positive and finally get round to reading Infinite Jest. (Also, uhm, good luck with that)..

6: PLATF9RM has loads of free stuff on!

Other than the afore-mentioned Social, we’ve got a Virgin StartUp event on how to start a business in 2018, plys our very first ‘Walkshop’ with new PLATF9RM members Unknown Epic; starting at 8am from secret location (within 15 minutes of Tower Point) it will be two hours of walking, talking, fresh coffee and a light breakfast surrounded by nature. The idea is to get out of the office and refresh our heads in an inspiring environment. Lovely.

7: It’s the cheapest time to book a holiday

According to Skyscanner, buying an international flight is potentially 36% cheaper in January. So if you can find a few extra pennies, book yourself a winter trip and get some vitamin D in those bones.

8: There’s never a better time to join the new business revolution!

According to 123Reg.com, we Brits are 10% more likely to start a new business in January, with the amounts doing so growing at a rate of 20% annually. This means that in January we’re being more inspiring, more creative and more resourceful than ever! Go you, go us, go EVERYONE.
