This week our Member of the Week is the fabulous Mirren Daykin. Mirren is a freelance fashion and textiles designer who occupies one of our dedicated desks in the library. Mirren often delights the PLATF9RM staff by letting us watch as she freehand paints extraordinary watercolour designs.
SO, WHAT DOES A FREELANCE FASHION AND TEXTILE DESIGNER DO IN THEIR DAY TO DAY?
I usually produce about ten designs a week so depending on what stage I’m at I could be drawing or colouring or getting something digitally ready for production. Occasionally I could be stitching and sewing all day if a roll of fabric has just got back from the printers.
AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO PLATF9RM?
A friend of a friend was hot desking here. I’d been working at home for 3 years and was going quietly insane so thought it was probably best to make a change!
WHAT INSPIRES YOUR DESIGNS?
I’m designing for autumn/winter 2018 at the moment so I’ll be looking at the current catwalks to see if I can spot any trends that will be relevant then. Also a lot of exhibitions and gallery spaces filter through into my work.
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER AND WHY?
My taste changes quite a lot but at the moment I really like Mara Hoffman, who does a lot of colourful stripes and block colours… she does designs that are a bit like a Frank Stella painting. I also really like Emilio Pucci... and you can’t really go wrong with an Hermes scarf!
WHEN I SAY 'HOME', WHERE SPRINGS TO MIND?
I’d like to say Brighton but really it’s Scotland. I lived there for a few years and now haven’t lived there for quite a few, but it’s still a place that definitely has my heart.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX?
I do a lot of yoga. I like an old man pub too, they’re probably the best thing about the approaching winter!
IMAGINE YOU'RE IN 'DA CLUB', WHERE ARE WE MOST LIKELY TO FIND YOU...
CENTRE OF THE DANCEFLOOR, HANGING AT THE BAR OR HUGGING THE WALLS?
Think it depends on the crowd and the music but I do really like dancing... so probably the dancefloor.
WHAT COULDN'T YOU LIVE WITHOUT?
I think a life without colour would be pretty depressing!
AND FINALLY, WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE END-OF-THE-WEEK TIPPLE?
I’ve just discovered white negronis which are delicious, but if it’s the end of the week then I’m really not too fussy!
Another week, another member. Join us again next time to get to know somebody else here at PLATF9RM a little bit better.
