This week we’re talking to Mark Robbins, one of PLATF9RM’s floor 5 dedicated desk users. Mark works for Rebel as an email developer and CSS hacker extraordinaire… We’re going to leave it him to explain what exactly that means!
FIRST UP, IN LAYMAN’S TERMS PLEASE, WHAT DO YOU DO?
So I’m an email developer for Rebel who are a New York based company. We basically put website functionality into emails, so things like writing reviews and buying stuff can be done directly from the inbox. I’m also going to be running a CodePen meetup here at PLATF9RM on the 4th October.
AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO PLATF9RM?
I was renting a desk from a friend who runs a company in town but they kept expanding and eventually ran out of space. I wanted to stay central and have other people around - somewhere with a busy but relaxed atmosphere.
TELL ME, WHAT’S THE WORST JOB YOU’VE EVER HAD?
I’ve not had many bad jobs but the hardest thing I ever did was when, quite a few years ago, I was working on a film and we did a week solid of 20 hour days and the last day was a 30 hour day!
WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE GUILTY PLEASURE SONG?
Some 90s hip hop, like Boom! Shake The Room with the Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
WHAT OR WHO IS CURRENTLY YOUR SCREENSAVER?
It’s quite boring, just one of the Mac default ones with pictures from National Geographic - so lots of nice animals.
IF YOU COULD WITNESS ANY EVENT - PAST, PRESENT, OR FUTURE - WHICH EVENT WOULD IT BE?
It would probably have to be a gig… So maybe Sex Pistols at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall. It's so infamous - everyone claims to have been there, but only a few people actually were!
AND, STICKING WITH THAT THEME, WHAT’S THE BEST GIG YOU’VE EVER ACTUALLY BEEN TO?
I think it would have to be Ian Brown. I saw him play at Digital about 10 years ago, when it first opened. We were expecting just a DJ set and he turned up with a full 12-piece band and played all the classics.
WHO WOULD PLAY YOU IN THE FILM OF YOUR LIFE?
Nicholas Cage, because he makes great films as well as terrible films… And I don’t know how my life is going to turn out! But he would suit it, either way.
WHAT’S THE CLOSEST YOU’VE EVER COME TO DEATH?
Recently I was trying to convert an old radio into a guitar amplifier, as you do, and I sort of lost track and left it plugged in whilst I was working. Then I heard a loud bang and all the lights went out. I had completely fried the inside of the radio but thankfully I was okay!
Another week, another member. Join us again next time to get to know somebody else here at PLATF9RM a little bit better.
