PLATF9RM Presents: The Circular Economy

  • PLATF9RM Floor 5, Tower Point Brighton, BN1 1YR United Kingdom (map)

Are you ready to face the future smiling? This month we're exploring an ecosystem approach that we can all get on board with, for the sake of our communities and our planet. In June, PLATF9RM will be exploring the circular economy. We’ve invited a selection of inspiring speakers to demonstrate the ecosystem approach that will facilitate a true circular economy while meeting the economic needs of our society – all within the limits of our planet. The climate is shifting, both socially and geologically. As individuals and communities, it's our responsibility to adapt our methods and practices. Come and join the conversation.

Speakers include:

Sally May

Sally is a coach and consultant with a passion for the circular economy. As a business and leadership coach, she helps people connect with the important stuff, make plans, eliminate the self-sabotage and collaborate more effectively with those around them. She also offers consulting services (communications, leadership development), building on the experience she gained working in international teams with Fortune 500 companies at Accenture for 18 years in France, Germany and the UK. She has recently teamed up with a local trainer to provide a series of productivity workshops and is about to launch one called “Saying No”! Sally sees the Circular Economy as a great way to get people to think differently and get creative in business and politics, and is on the delivery team of Circular Brighton & Hove to do just that.

Peter Desmond

Peter is a Chartered Accountant and MBA graduate bringing a broad commercial perspective to his work on the circular economy. Using his experience from 40 years as a strategic advisor, coach, trainer and senior finance executive, he now supports SMEs and corporates in the UK and Africa in getting started on their circular economy journeys. He is a Circular Economy Club Mentor a co-founder of Circular Brighton & Hove which organises monthly meetings to help accelerate the transition towards Brighton & Hove becoming a circular city. He is also a Strategic Advisor with Rethink Solutions which helps businesses make sense of circular thinking. Peter has an MA (Distinction) in Globalisation, Business and Development from the Institute of Development Studies at Sussex University. His dissertation: “Towards a circular economy in South Africa – what are the constraints to recycling mobile phones?” enabled him to uncover the ways that circular approaches benefit developing economies. Following his graduation in 2016, he returned to South Africa to co-found and chair the African Circular Economy Network. This aims to build a restorative African economy that creates well-being and prosperity for its people whilst regenerating environmental resources. He has contributed a chapter on Africa to the recently published book “The Circular Economy and the Global South”.

Harriet Dean Orange

Harriet is an NHS Ambassador for Sustainability in Healthcare and has transferred her skills in sustainability into the Harriet’s of Hove shop that she co-owns with partner Mhiran. The shop is a food, toiletries and kitchen products refills store and the only completely plastic free packaging shop in Hove. It is a first time business venture for them together and they truly hope that Harriet’s of Hove can grow to be more than just a refill store for the community. In time, they hope to see their business flourish and become an environmental hub of interest and will be using the space for classes and groups in the evening. The overall goal is to make sustainable living accessible for all.
