9 Things You Need To Do This February

It’s February, praise be! Finally, we can all start acting normally and stop feeling guilty every time we dare to partake in an activity we enjoy. From a visual art festival to naked dancing, here’s the nine Brighton things you need to be across this month.

diep-haven – All month – Various locations

This cross-channel festival of visual art is rooted in the towns of Newhaven and Dieppe, but sees events all over East Sussex and Normandy. It will see open houses, artists residencies and all sorts of creative wonder as it investigates its central theme for this year: the relationship between human beings and the landscape.

We love Wes Anderson – Mondays throughout the month – Duke’s & Komedia

Wes Anderson is releasing his new film Isle Of Dogs in March and, to celebrate, Duke’s at Komedia is presenting a retrospective of his filmography. Taking place on consecutive Mondays in February, they’ll start at his debut Bottle Rocket and continue in order to The Grand Budapest Hotel. For the heads and Zissou virgins alike.

Pop-Up Brighton Love Box Pop-Up – Throughout February – Pop-Up Brighton

The creative kids at Pop-Up Brighton are helping us to cherish the love with a series of love-themed events. From self-love yoga to candlelit dinners to something called ‘Dance Your Naked Truth’, they’re leaving no stone unturned in their quest for more of that sweet amour.

Free yoga class for the self-employed – 8 February – Telecom House

Them kids at Crunch Chorus are best known for their meet-ups but they’re doing their hardest to keep us all mindful and lithe by offering this free yoga class for the self-employed. Places are limited so if you want to set yourself on the path to the perfect Downward Dog, apply fast!

Pottery Classes by Potters Thumb – 12-14 February - 10 New England Road

Channel your inner Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore by taking some pottery classes with your beloved this Valentine’s Day. Potters Thumb is run by Mark Ciavola and his workshops will give you an introduction to the ancient art of pottery and – hopefully – a chance reenact that famous scene from Ghost.

Drawing Club – 14 February - The Hope & Ruin

Whether you’re an illustrator extraordinaire or hopeless stickman-doodler, Drawing Club’s Valentine’s event at The Hope & Ruin will be making sure NO-ONE draws alone this year. Hosted by PLATF9RM's very our own Amy Brown, expect freaky consequences, prizes for sick imaginations and its quite famous penis-drawing round.

Party In Your Pants – All Tomorrow’s Panties – 17 February – The Green Door Store

Over the last couple of years, Party In Your Pants has developed a reputation for being Brighton’s most open-minded and inclusive party. Come prepared to “experience freedom from the pressure to be attractive, thin, young, gender conforming and especially to be free from the need to guard against creeps.” And dance in your pants, obviously.

Upcycling Workshop by Coco Boho Home – 17 February - Rottingdean Whiteway Centre

Brighton based artist, designer and painter Victoria McDonald runs afternoon workshops which transform your tired house furniture into beautiful pieces that will brighten any room. This class is a combination of furniture painting and decorative techniques that mostly sound like 17th-century French insults: decoupage! Craquelure!

Rex Orange County - 19 February - Patterns

Surrey-born Rex might be just 18 but he’s channeling a broad musical palette that touches on King Krule, Toro y Moi and Frank Ocean. Rex has been on every ‘ones to watch this year’ and this time next year will be simply ‘one we’re all watching lots’. Catch him in a smaller venue while you still can.
