9 Things You Should Definitely Do In Brighton In July

It’s July! You’ve got a semblance of a tan-line, you’re losing two pairs of sunglasses a week, and you’ve noticed that people on the street have this strange facial countenance that suggests they’re…well…kinda…happy? Weird, innit.

Anyway, here’s our guide to this month’s nine must-visit events.

1. Bastille Day Celebration @ The George Payne - Friday 14 & Saturday 15 July

The newly-swish George Payne will celebrating all things France with an Edith Piaf tribute act on Friday, before a Les Enfants day on Saturday. For the latter expect a garden party, free crepes and lots of gurgled screams at the prospect of eating frogs legs.

2. Trans Pride: The Party! @ North Laine Brewhouse - Saturday 22 July

The official tear-up for the Trans Pride 2017 weekender; get down to the frankly over-large North Laine Brewhouse for a explosion of trans-friendly DJs, art, crafts and performance.

3. Pride Dog Show @ Preston Park - 11AM, Sunday 30 July

This charity event is all for fun, all for charity, and has both pedigree and non-pedigree classes. .And did we say there was GOING TO BE LOADS OF CUTE FURRY WOOFERS THERE. WAAHHHHH!!!

4. PLATF9RM Social - 5PM- late, Thursday 27 July

We’re going to the beach; yep, we’re going rogue and have started a sweepstake on who’s the first to go for a dip after too many wines. (Olga. Definitely Olga.)

5. Absolute Bowie - Anthology Weekend @ Concorde 2 - Friday 21 & Saturday 22 July

Humanity’s greatest alien might have gone back from whence he came, but he’s still a hero back here on Earth. The Friday of this double-header will see this renowned tribute band tackle Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie up to Station to Station. Saturday comes everything after.

6. Othello @ Brighton Open Air Theatre (B.O.A.T)- Wednesday 12 July - Saturday 15 July

Shakespeare’s classic tale of jealousy and revenge gets an 80s-inspired makeover that draws on the life of cult artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Expect great hair and a fair wallop of intolerable sadness.

7. Brighton’s Big Screen Launch @ Madeira Drive – 11AM - 11PM, Saturday 29 July

Kicking off a month of outdoor film-related shows is a day of music headlined by Gilles Peterson. Peterson is the very byword for quality and diversity when it comes to music, and he’ll be accompanied by his old mate, the brilliantly-named MC Zinger.

8. It’s a London Thing @ The Arch- 11PM - 5AM, Friday 21 July

It’s a London Thing were one of the original club heavyweights of garage’s first wave in the 90s. 20 years later they’ve an anniversary club tour with DJs like Matt Jam Lamont an Genius Cru; if you know your Wookies from your Heartless Crews you’ll be lapping it up, pre-millenium style.

9. Brighton Pre-Work Rave- The Glittery Beginning @ Revenge - 6AM - 11AM, Wednesday 26 July

There’s two schools of thoughts about pre-work sober raves. Some say they’re the ultimate pre- work workout and a spiritually uplifting segue into another day hacking at the dusty coalface of this thing we call life. Others claim that they are neo-hippy balderdash. If you’re in the former camp this event - with three floors of wellness activities, a glitter makeup boudoir and an onsite ‘motivational dance superstar ’- is the one for you. If you’re in the latter, well, we’ve probably said enough.
